Longtime professor, writer, scholar and fighter for justice, Professor Marina Angel, passed away at her home on February 1, 2025. Marina, daughter of the late Dr. Nicholas M. Angel and the late Stella (nee Korakidas) Angel, was born Manhattan’s Upper Westside, New York. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Barnard College in 1965. She earned her law degree (magnacum laude) from Columbia Law School. She obtained her LLM in 1977 at the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
Marina started her teaching career in 1971 as an Associate Professor of Law at Hofstra University Law School through 1978. In January 1979, until her retirement in May of 2017, she was a Professor of Law at Temple University Beasley School of Law, where she taught classes in Criminal Law and Procedure, Labor and Employment Law, Juvenile Law, Women and the Law, Violence Against Women and Corrections. She served at various times at the Law School as Associate Dean for Graduate Legal Studies and External Programs, Symposium Coordinator for several international conferences, the Summer Session Director Abroad in Greece, and as an Advisor for the Women’s Law Caucus, Hellenic American Law Students, Korean Law Students, Latin American Law Students, LGBTQ+ students. In addition, she served in various capacities on many Law School and University committees.
Professor Angel has over 40 publications and articles to her credit and received many awards as a champion for justice. Among the most notable, she was awarded the Sandra Day O’Connor Award in 1996 by the Philadelphia Bar Association in recognition of her legal and academic mentoring contributions to the legal profession. In 2017, she received the Ruth Bader Ginsburg Lifetime Achievement Award, an honor that recognizes an individual who has had a distinguished career in teaching, service and scholarship. These awards, along with her many others throughout her fifty years as a internationally known champion of civil rights and women’s issues, has distinguished her among law school professors and researchers nationwide. Outside of her professional life, Marina enjoyed travelling, especially to Greece, the islands in particular. Her father was from Peloponnesus and her mother from Constantinople. She was a member of the Greek Orthodox community of St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral where she volunteered her time to the Ladies Philoptochos.

Lunch will be served following the service
in the Church’s Master Hall. Interment will be held privately.
