It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of George Saketos, who passed away peacefully on July 8th, 2026 at the age of 93.
Born in 1932 in New York City, George moved to Greece as a toddler and spent his early childhood in Nafpaktos. Upon returning to New York permanently, he followed in his father’s footsteps and became an accomplished florist. He and his brother became the owners of a successful flower shop in Washington Heights. Shortly thereafter, he married the love of his life, Catherine. Together, they raised their three children in Jackson Heights, in a home filled with unconditional love, happiness, and unwavering support. As active members of Sts. Catherine and George Greek Orthodox Church, they fostered friendships rooted in their faith, as it was central to their lives.
George’s life was defined by his belief in God, hard work, sacrifice, and devotion to his family. He was a loving husband to his wife Catherine for 69 years. He was a proud and loving father to John and his wife Cali, Maria and her husband Angelo, and Demetria and her husband George. His guidance, advice, and support knew no bounds. He loved being a grandfather to Catherine, Artemis, David, and George and took immense pride in each of their accomplishments.
George loved swimming at the beach in Northport and tending to his garden. He was an avid reader and always found time to enjoy a good article in a newspaper or magazine. George had an infectious laugh which filled a room, drawing others in, and making even ordinary moments feel special.
George’s passing leaves an immeasurable void in the lives of his family. The examples he set during his lifetime are certain to live within the lives of the people he touched.
